RICHFIELD HOUSE, BALLYMAGYR CASTLE, KILLAG, CO. WEXFORD.

The ancient Norman settlement of Ballymagyr nestles in a quiet rural setting 2km from the long golden beach and dunes of Ballyteigh on the south Wexford coast. Four miles away is the fishing village of Kilmore Quay, with its seafood restaurants and harbour where the boat departs for
the Saltee Islands, the habitat of the guillemot and gannets.

At Ballymagyr the buildings, gardens and pond are surrounded by mature trees affording an air of timeless, tranquil seclusion. The 14th century bawn wall shelters the gardens from the wind and creates a warm microclimate for plants and vegetables. The medieval buildings were georgianised in the early 1700’s and are now bright and airy, but some of medieval features still remain – the hidden stone mural stairs, canon ledge and pot lug holes.

This restored large four bed roomed Georgian house, with 3 bathrooms, kitchen and dining area with access to the walled garden and a large living area. The upper floor bedroom/study has a floor
area of 47 square metres.

Richfield House boasts a pond from Georgian times, outbuildings from Victorian times and geothermal heating from the 21st century. This ensures that although the building has the appearance and feel of old it also have the comforts of modern living. The property has high energy ratings, well in excess of the current building regulation requirements, with under floor geothermal heating at a fraction of the cost of conventional heating. Electricity could be obtained from the nearby wind farm and a laudable carbon footprint achieved.

A club class, all weather tennis court is set into the walled garden with a sheltered table tennis
area for the less adventurous. The surrounding walls and trees make for a perfect setting.

If peace is what interests then a seat by the pond watching the moorhens and ducks is an option. When you are in Ballymagyr you are surrounded by ancient walls and tall trees, unless you climb to the top floor of the castle, where you can see, from above the treetops, the sweep of
Ballyteigh Beach and Hook Head.
